Cheap flights & travel

There are two things that make Puerto Pollensa, an old fishing village, an outstanding holiday destination. The first is its setting, the horseshoe-shaped bay with its wide, sandy beach, sits against the blue-black Tramuntana mountains. Its pine-tree shaded promenade, running along the northern stretch of the beach, is the second. Apart from its obvious attractions of shops, cafes and hotels, it is a wonderful spot to take part in the paseo, the evening stroll.

It is situated on the northwest coast of Mallorca on the peninsula of Formentor, a 90-minute or so drive from Palma at which travellers taking flights to Puerto Pollensa land.

A resort favoured mostly by families and couples, its calm waters are ideal for small children and the sands are soft and white. Much of the resort is pedestrianised too. Not the place for riotous nightlife, revellers would find Alcudia better for that than Puerto Pollensa.

The local eateries serve Majorcan specialities such as suckling pig, kid, fritos (fried offal) and snails, while the waterfront is the place to head for seafood.

Puerto Pollensa Insider Information

  • Come here for a festival. The queen of Spain is the patron of the classical musical festival held every year in the cloisters and the town hall. For rougher stuff be part of the street festival in August when the Moors and the Christians battle it out over 24 hours with bands, processions and fireworks
  • Buy your fruit at the Sunday morning market and then join the locals in the little terrace outside Café Espanol. This is a beautiful town, and you can watch the artists at work or get out your own sketchbook or camera.
  • Hotel Formentor near the beach of Formentor was Mallorca’s first luxury hotel when it opened in 1929. An EU summit was held here in 1995 and it has been visited by many including Charlie Chaplin, Grace Kelly and Aristotle Onassis.
