Continental Airlines is based in Houston and is the fourth-largest airline in the US. From its hubs at Houston-Bush, Newark and Cleveland, Continental flies to destinations throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The airline is due to join the Star Alliance in October 2009.

How to find the best deals for Continental Airlines flights

The best way to be alerted to the cheapest Continental deals is to become a OnePass member, which allows you to subscribe to the Specials email. Once you are signed up, Continental will send you an email every Monday or Tuesday when the specials are posted so that you don't miss a thing. Check-in is permitted between 60 minutes and 24 hours before scheduled departure.

Baggage

Hand luggage: one bag per passenger, with a maximum weight of 18kg and maximum linear dimension of 115 cm (length + width + height). You can also carry one personal item, such as a briefcase, small laptop or handbag.

Checked: on flights between the UK and US, two checked bags are permitted per passenger, each with a maximum weight of 23kg and maximum size of 157 linear cm. There is no free baggage allowance for flights within 50 US states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada. On these services, the first checked bag costs $15 if paid online ($20 at the airport), and the second bag costs $25 pre-paid ($30 at the airport).

Excess: rates vary by destination. For transatlantic services, the cost of checking an additional bag is $150; the cost of checking an overweight bag up to 32kg is $50; and the charge for oversized baggage ranges from $150 to $300.

Child Fares

For domestic US flights, children under the age two fly for free on the lap of an adult 18 years or older. If two or more children under two years of age are travelling with the same passenger, only one of them may sit on the accompanying adult's lap. Any additional children under two years are required to have a ticket and pay the applicable child fare. For international travel, children under the age of two are subject to infant fares and taxes. Children over two are required to purchase a ticket and occupy a customer seat with a separate seat belt.

Senior Fares

Available to selected destinations for passengers aged 65 and above. Ask for more details on these fares when you make your reservation, or when booking online select the Seniors (age 65 and older) category.

Pets

Continental allows domesticated cats, dogs, rabbits, and birds to be carried in the aircraft cabin on most domestic US flights. An in-cabin pet may be carried instead of a carry-on bag and is subject to a $125 service charge each way. Continental also allows pets to travel as cargo through its PetSafe programme. Contact the reservation centre for details about international restrictions.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments can be carried on board or checked as baggage. A seat can also be purchased for an instrument or an instrument can be carried in place of a carry-on bag. The maximum dimension is 115 linear cm (length + width + height) with a maximum weight of 23kg.

In-flight Service

Non-alcoholic drinks are provided free of charge on Continental flights, but there is a $5 charge for alcoholic drinks. Snacks are served in economy class on flights over two hours that fall within standard mealtimes. Full meals are served on all transatlantic flights.
