Online check-in is available 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to take off. Boarding passes may be printed at passengers' home computers, faxed to them or they may receive a boarding pass electronically on a mobile or PDA (available from some cities). Passengers may also check-in at a kiosk at the airport and print their boarding passes there. From the UK, recommended check-in (and baggage check) time is one hour before scheduled departure. Passengers should be at the gate 30 minutes before the flight.

Airline overview

Continental Airlines is a subsidiary of United Airlines. This merged airline (name: United Airlines) is the largest carrier in the world by number of passenger-miles flown.

With United Express, Continental Express and Continental Connection, the new carrier operates almost 6,000 flights per day to nearly 400 destinations throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. Major hubs are Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Guam, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo and Washington, D.C. From the UK, Continental Airlines flies from London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast airports.

On 30 November 2011, the Federal Aviation Administration issued United Airlines with a single operating certificate, which means that United and Continental now operate as one carrier. Passengers may still purchase flights on United and Continental flights, check-in and fly with the two separate airlines. Check-in and frequent-flyer programmes are expected to be merged early in 2012.
