The fifth-largest airline in the world, Northwest (and Northwest Airlink) operates 1,500 flights to more than 750 destinations worldwide. With hub cities at Amsterdam, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Tokyo, the airline has a fleet of more than 400 aircraft and over 40,000 employees worldwide.
In Autumn 2009, Northwest was one of several major US carriers that levied a surcharge of up to $50 (US) (about £30) for flying on busy travel days such as those around Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Hand luggage: one item allowed per person, not exceeding 114 linear cm (height + length + width) or 18 kg. Personal items, such as laptops, books, handbags etc are also allowed.

Checked: On domestic flights, two items are allowed, weighing not more than 23kg with maximum dimensions of 158 linear cm. On international flights, three pieces of luggage are allowed, each weighing no more than 32 kg with linear dimensions not more 158cm.
Excess: oversized items are charged at $80 (£40) each for up to 406 linear cm. Anything over 406cm will not be carried. Overweight luggage is charged at an extra $25 (£12) for up to 32 kg and $50 (£25) for 32kg to 45kg. Items over 45kg will not be carried.
Fee for extra luggage is $80 (£40) for the first excess piece; $105 (£55) for the next three; and $180 (£90) for anything more than a total of six, including the two free pieces.
