Passengers may check-in online between 24 hours and 30 minutes before the flight is scheduled to depart. For Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, online check-in "closes" one hour before take-off. Mobile check-in is also available.
Self check-in machines are available at most airports in the UK. Economy-Class travellers on shorthaul routes are requested to use Online Check-in or Self Check-in where available. Some groups of passengers may check-in at an airport desk. These are Business travellers and those on Flexible Economy fares, Gold or Silver Diamond Club members.
For short-haul flights, airport check-in desks close 30 minutes before take off. Desks close between 45 and 60 minutes for medium and long-haul flights.
Hand luggage: the cabin baggage allowance is one piece (max dimensions 55 x 40 x 23cm) for Economy flyers, two pieces for Business-Class travellers. In addition, a small personal item can be carried on board.
Checked: Economy-class travellers taking short and long-haul routes are allowed 20kg of luggage. On short-haul routes (domestic UK and European) passengers are allowed to bring just one bag (weighing up to 20kg). On long-haul routes, flyers can carry unlimited pieces, but the maximum total weight is still 20kg (30kg to Addis Ababa and Khartoum and 46kg to Freetown). Business-Class travellers are granted 30kg (unlimited pieces) on short and long-haul routes (40kg to Cairo, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Addis Ababa and Khartoum and 64kg to Freetown). Bmi Gold, Silver Diamond Club and Star Alliance Gold members get an additional 20kg.
Excess: charges vary by destination or "tiers". Fees start at £10 per kg (or €12/kg) for domestic flights (including Dublin) and rise, by tier, to between £12 per kg (€14) and £22 per kg (€25).
On short-haul flights, the seat pitch is 81cm (32in). On mid and long-haul flights, it's between 79 and 81cm (31-32in).
Seats can be selected via the Manage my booking page once the booking has been confirmed, up to 28 hours before departure. Seats are allocated during check-in. Selecting seats is not open to Economy travellers on short-haul routes or to Economy Flexible flyers between Heathrow and Brussels, Dublin, Belfast City, Glasgow and Edinburgh. For these, seats may be selected during Online Check-in or at the airport.
Bookings can be changed (if the fare rules permit) via the Manage my booking section of the website or via the Call Centre. Change fees - for Economy-Class tickets - are £50/€60 per person, per change, plus any difference in fares. Flexible Economy fares are more flexible and changes can be made free of charge. Names on tickets may not be changed.
Discounts are available on some international routes for children between the age of two and 11 at about 70 per cent of the adult fare. Infants under the age of two can travel on an adult's lap for about 10 per cent of the adult fare.
There's no discount for older travellers.
Passengers can take dogs, cats or ferrets on UK domestic flights or from the UK on an international service. An extra charge is levied for this. Pets must be transported in IATA-approved containers large enough for the pet to turn about while standing, to stand and sit, and to lie in a natural position. The airline recommends that passengers notify the airline as early as possible.
Standard baggage allowances apply. A separate seat may be purchased to carry a large or fragile instrument instead of checking it in to the aircraft’s baggage compartment.
On short-haul flights in Economy Class snacks and drinks can be purchased. On mid and long-haul flights the complimentary in-flight service includes meals, drinks (soft and alcoholic), seat-back entertainment and complimentary newspaper.
Bmi's frequent-flyer programme, Diamond Club, offers air miles, exclusive offers and online account access.
The menu (pdf format) for snacks available to purchase on short-haul flights can be read online. See photographs of bmi meals and read reviews from fellow flyers at AirlineMeals.net.
The airline's in-flight magazine, Voyager, is available on all flights and can be read online.
Bmi is a member of the Star Alliance.
BMI (British Midland International) has been flying since the late 1940s. It's the second-largest airline at London Heathrow and is a member of the Star Alliance. BMI flies domestically, and to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. In July 2009 it became a member of the Lufthansa group of airlines.
Over the past few years the carrier has shifted its focus at Heathrow, ending some regional services (Leeds Bradford, Durham Tees Valley, Jersey and Inverness) and, facing competition from Eurostar, axing flights to Paris and Brussels. Flights to destinations such as Moscow, Cairo and Riyadh have been launched, concentrating on business travellers.
In November 2011, it was reported that Lufthansa is to sell bmi to International Airlines Group, the parent of BA and Iberia.
