Kansai International is on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. Construction of the island took six years to complete (from 1987 to 1993). The last phase to be completed was the construction of a bridge to connect the airport to the mainland. A second runway opened in 2007. The airport serves approximately 45 airlines.

Water: There is a sea ferry route to Awaji Island (Sumoto) (journey time: 45 minutes). A shuttle bus runs between the terminal building and the ferry terminal.
Rail: The Kansai Airport Station is served by Japanese Railways trains; the limited express Haruka line runs to Kyoto (journey time: 1 hour 15 minutes) and other destinations, while the Kansai rapid service runs to Kyobashi (journey time: 1 hour 30 minutes) and other destinations.
Road: Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the passenger terminal. Bus: Buses are available to all major hotels and surrounding destinations. Buses arrive at the International Departures area and depart from the Arrivals areas. Tickets can be purchased outside the terminals.
The two multi-storey car parks directly access the passenger terminal; there are also two open-air car parks.
An information centre (tel: +81 (0)724 552 500) is located on each floor of the airport. Travel and tourist information counters are located on the first floor. There are numerous "E-Stand" information kiosks situated around the International Departures and transit areas, offering information and Internet connection. The Kansai Tourist Information Centre is located on the first floor (tel: +81 (0)724 566 025).
Money and communications: A bank, ATMs, bureaux de change and a post office are available. Wireless internet is available, and there are 25 @Stations for internet access, available daily 24 hours. Mobile phone hire is also available.Eating and drinking: The airport has many restaurants, coffee shops and bars.Shopping: There are newsagents, as well as a wide variety of shops, including duty-free.Luggage: A porter service is available (tel: +81 (0)724 553 450). Left-luggage and luggage delivery are also available.Other facilities: There is a medical clinic at the airport; a dentist is located on the third floor of the Aeroplaza, a few minutes from the terminal building. There is a children’s room, nurseries and changing rooms.
The Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport (tel: +81 (0)724 551 111) is the only hotel on the airport island and is connected directly to the terminal. Nearby hotels include the Ana Gate Tower Hotel and the Ramada Kansai Airport Hotel (the latter provides an airport shuttle). There is a hotel reservation counter in Arrivals on the first floor of the terminal.
The airport has disabled toilets and lifts between floors. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
There is a conference room and business centre on the fourth floor providing telephone, fax and internet facilities, as well as PC rental, secretarial and catering services. The on-site Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport (tel: +81 (0)724 551 111) has a fully equipped business centre and conference facilities for up to 500 delegates.
