The busiest single-runway airport in the US handled more than 18 million passengers in 2008. There are about 600 arrivals and departures each day, most on passenger service. In total, 24 passenger airlines and cargo carriers are housed by the airport. Southwest Airlines is its largest carrier with 36 per cent of passengers.

Getting into Town

Road: Taxi: Taxi, limousine and shuttle bus services to hotels and central San Diego destinations are available from the Transportation Plazas in front of each terminal. Bus: The Flyer Route no.992 runs between the airport and downtown San Diego, stopping at the Sante Fe depot for connections to Coaster trains (linking the North County and downtown San Diego) and the Amtrak train station for nationwide services. Buses also connect to San Diego’s trolley service.

Car Parking

Car parks are located in front of each terminal, with short- and long-term rates available. Long-term parking is available at 3302 Pacific Highway, with a free 24-hour shuttle to/from the airport. Off-site parking is also available.

Information Desks

Airport ambassadors staff Travelers Aid desks and provide roving assistance throughout the terminals and two staffed information booths in Terminals 1 and 2 (tel: +1 619 231 7361 in Terminal 1 and +1 619 231 5230 in Terminal 2). There is also a recorded information line (tel: +1 619 231 2100).

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Bureaux de change and ATMs are available.

Eating and drinking: There are restaurants, bars, fast-food outlets, coffee shops and snack bars.

Shopping: A variety of shops can be found in Terminals 1 and 2, but there are no duty-free shops at the airport.

Luggage: A lost property office is located in Terminal 2 (tel: +1 619 686 8002).

Other facilities: AED units (defibrillators) are installed throughout the terminals.

Airport Hotels

Hotel / motel reservation boards can be found in the baggage reclaim areas. There are no hotels within the airport grounds, but the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina (tel: +1 619 291 2900) is located directly opposite the airport and there are several hotels nearby. These include the Best Western At The Yacht Harbor (tel: +1 619 224 3254), Holiday Inn - San Diego Bayside (tel: +1 619 224 3621), Radisson Hotel La Jolla (tel: +1 858 453 5500), Ramada Plaza Hotel Circle (tel: +1 619 291 6500) and the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina (tel: +1 619 234 1500), all of which have a courtesy shuttle available from the airport.

Airport Disabled Facilities

There are lifts and TDD phones, and fully accessible toilets. The inter-terminal shuttle and Flyer Route bus are wheelchair-accessible. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel. Assistance is available from volunteer airport ambassadors throughout the airport, and by calling from any courtesy or TDD phone. Disabled parking is available in all terminal car parks.

Airport Conference and Business Facilities

Several airlines provide club lounges for members and business-class passengers. The Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina (tel: +1 619 291 2900) has a business centre, 43 meeting rooms, a ballroom, and exhibition hall available, accommodating up to 1,600 delegates.

Directions

The airport is served by I-5 with connections to Route 163, I-8 and I-15. From I-5 northbound, take the San Diego Airport/Hawthorn Street exit; follow signs onto westbound Hawthorn Street, continue to North Harbor Drive and turn right for the airport. From I-5 southbound, take the San Diego Airport/Sassafras Street exit onto Kettner Boulevard and turn right at the traffic lights at Sassafras Street, then left at the next lights onto Pacific Highway. Then, turn right at Laurel Street and right again at the next lights (North Harbor Drive) for the airport.

Car Rentals

Advantage, Alamo, Autorent, Avis, Budget, City Rent, Dollar, Enterprise, Express, Fox, Getaway, Hertz, National, Pacific, Southwest, Thrifty and West Coast Rent a Car have nearby off-airport facilities, served by shuttles. The car hire companies may be contacted at the ground transportation service boards located in the baggage reclaim areas (tel: +1 619 231 2100).
