Virginia’s Washington Dulles International Airport is named after the late Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. It served about 25 million passengers in 2007. Eleven US airlines and 22 international carriers offer nonstop service worldwide. A major construction programme is underway. Called D2, Dulles Development, it includes the expansion of Concourse B, a new runway, and an automated people mover system.

Getting into Town

Taxi: Washington Flyer Taxicabs exclusively serve Dulles International Airport, offering a 24-hour service. Limousines: Limousine services are also available and passengers must book these in advance.

Bus: The Washington Flyer bus runs to West Falls Church Metro Station. Metrorail services can be accessed by taking this bus to West Falls Metro Station. There is a Metrobus express service between downtown Washington DC and the airport, along the Dulles Corridor. Greyhound also provides a service from the airport to several locations in Virginia. Washington Flyer tickets are available at the ground transportation centre ticket counter, on the Arrivals level. The bus departs from outside the Arrivals level, door 4. Super Shuttle provides a door-to-door shared-ride service, also stopping at Union Station, available on demand from outside the terminal building.

Car Parking

Hourly and daily parking is available within walking distance of the terminal. Hourly parking is located in front of the terminal and there are two daily car parks: Garage 1 and Garage 2, both linked with the terminal. A free shuttle also runs between the garages and the terminal. Four long-term car parks are connected to the terminal by a free shuttle service. Information Desks

The International Visitors Information Services desk (tel: +1 703 572 2536 or 572 2537) is on the baggage reclaim (lower) level. Travelers Aid services (tel: +1 703 572 8296) are available at the information counter, which is also located on the baggage reclaim level.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs, bureaux de change and internet kiosks are situated throughout the airport. Mobile phone hire is available on Concourse B.

Eating and drinking: A wide variety of bars, restaurants, fast-food outlets, coffee shops, ice cream parlours and cafés are available.

Shopping: A wide variety of retail outlets are available throughout the airport. Duty-free is available in the main terminal and on concourses B, C and D.

Luggage: Left-luggage facilities and lockers are not currently available. Luggage trolleys and a porter service are available throughout the airport. Lost property is handled by the Washington Dulles International Airport Police (tel: +1 703 572 2954).

Airport Hotels

The Washington Dulles Airport Marriott (tel: +1 703 471 9500) is located in the airport grounds; a shuttle service is takes passengers to/from the hotel. Nearby hotels include Comfort Inn (tel: +1 703 437 7555), Courtyard by Marriott (tel: +1 703 478 9400), Hilton Washington Dulles (tel: +1 703 478 2900) and the Holiday Inn Express Hendon-Reston (tel: +1 703 478 9777). A list of hotels located close to the airport, many of which provide free transportation to/from the airport, can be found in the ground transportation centre in the main terminal.

Airport Disabled Facilities

Wheelchairs and assistance are available through airline representatives and should be arranged prior to travel. Visual paging and TDDs are available. The airport has disabled toilets and lifts with Braille signs. There are also car parking spaces designated for disabled passengers in the airport car parks which are located either close to the terminal or close to the shuttle bus shelter. Airport shuttle buses equipped with wheelchair lifts can be requested to transport disabled passengers to/from the terminal building (tel: +1 703 572 4558).

Airport Conference and Business Facilities

Business service centres are located at the east end (tel: +1 703 572 2963) and west end (tel: +1 703 572 2969) of the upper level of the main terminal. They provide bureau de change facilities, insurance, fax, photocopying, notary and other services. There are also business service centres in Concourses B, C and D. Conference facilities are not available at the airport. The on-site Washington Dulles Airport Marriott (tel: +1 703 471 9500) has 14 meeting rooms, including a ballroom accommodating up to 520 delegates, and a fully equipped business centre.

Directions

From central Washington DC, go west on I-66 to exit 67 and follow signs to the airport. From Baltimore, go south on I-95 to exit 27 (I-495 West - "the Beltway") to exit 12B and follow signs to the airport. From Richmond, go north on I-95 to exit 170 (I-495 -"The Beltway") to exit 12B and follow signs to the airport. From West Virginia, go south on I-81 to I-66 East to exit 53 (Route 28 North), then follow Route 28 to the airport. From Roanoke, Southwest Virginia, go north on I-81 to I-66 East, follow I-66 East to exit 53 (Route 28 North), then follow Route 28 to the airport. The Dulles Access Highway is restricted to airport use only.

Car Rentals

Companies represented at the airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Courtesy telephones can be found in the ground transportation centre on the lower level of the main terminal. Shuttle buses, leaving from outside the terminal building, take passengers to pick up their car.
