Earnest yachtsmen and fishing enthusiasts have been flocking to the Abacos Islands for years but most holidaymakers have yet to discover these Caribbean gems. Situated in the northern Bahamas, the Abacos comprise many small islands including Wood Cay, Elbow Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay, Green Turtle Cay, and the two largest ones - Great Abaco and Little Abaco.
Slightly resembling Maine in New England, Abaco’s symbolic landmark is that of a red and white striped lighthouse. Once used as a safe harbour for British loyalists during the American Revolution, today Abaco is a firm favourite among sailors who can easily dock in its marinas and fishermen who can hire boats. Golf enthusiasts booking flights to Abaco should pack their golf clubs; Abaco has a spectacular 18-hole champion golf course overlooking two miles of turquoise blue sea.

Peak Season:
September through May is the cool season and the time when most people visit. The temperature is an average of 24 degrees Celsius.
Off Season:
May to October is the off season, with the most rainfall occurring in these months. However, it is not extreme and temperatures are at their highest, so low-season fares tempt many holidaymakers out during this time. Hurricane season is June to November. Prices fall in this time, though the chances of becoming caught up in a hurricane are slight.

- Treasure Cay is a good place to start but there are more inlets and undiscovered cays than you will have time to explore in one holiday. The warm turquoise sea creates the magic for all water activities whether sailing, diving, snorkeling or just lying on the white sandy beach with a glass in your hand.
- Abaco National Park is the only place where Abaco (Barbados) parrots are found, and the Wild Horse Preserve safeguards “barbs” horses which are the descendents of those that came over with Christopher Columbus.
- Get your fish cooked with its head on Bahaman style at a fish fry. There’s sure to be some rum punch involved, too, as well as calypso music and dancing.
