The excellent collection of Maori and Pacific Island artifacts at the Auckland Museum makes the site one of the most visited in the city. The museum was originally built as a war memorial with an exhibit about New Zealand at war, but now examines the country’s people and culture. One of the museum’s highlights is the Maori cultural song and dance performances that shine a light on Maori history and mythology. The museum overlooks Auckland and Waitemata Harbour from The Domain, an enormous city park from atop one of the city’s extinct volcanic hills.
