Sometimes referred to as “London on Sea,” the town of Brighton is the trendy urbanites’ seaside destination of choice. Popular since Regency England, Brighton’s architecture is appealing, with winding streets (known as “the lanes”), packed full with interesting and eclectic shops and cafés leading down to the seafront. The hub of the town is Palace Pier, the seafront and its famous pebbled beach.
The Brighton Pavilion is an amazing affair, seemingly transplanted from the East. It was built by the Prince Regent in 1815, in the style of the Taj Mahal. Visitors can tour the building to see its interiors and gardens. The liberal attitude that the Prince Regent brought to Brighton remains today. It is know as the “gay capital” of the UK and the area of Kemptown, especially, is full of bars, clubs and even hairdressers flying rainbow-coloured flags.
