Reasons to fly to Cervinia

The Italian ski resort of Cervinia sits in the middle of the Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche Zermatt district, one of the largest skiable areas in the Alps. From Cervinia you can ski in Italy and Switzerland and across three valleys. Named after the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino in Italian), the resort is positioned high in the mountains. It’s situated at 2,050m and has lifts that take skiers as high as 3,899m. With 350km of runs and seven brand new lifts to carry you across the ski area, this is the perfect spot for those skiers who don’t like to cover the same piste twice.

The resort itself is considered an upmarket one, though this is due more to its position among the slopes than any great beauty of the resort itself. Purpose built in the 1930s, the resort has none of the charm found in the French Alpine villages of wooden chalets. But skiers don’t book flights to Cervinia for the architecture, but for the altitude, endless miles of skiing  and the extensive après-ski.

When to fly to Cervinia

Peak season:

Due to the altitude, the winter season starts extremely early in Cervinia – in 2008 it opened on October 31 – and closes late. As with all ski resorts the Christmas, February half term and early Easter holidays (depending when Easter falls) are the most popular times of year. The resort also fills up hugely at weekends, when Italian tourists flock in from Milan and Turin, but even during the peak time it can be emptier during the weeks.

Off season:

Skiing continues throughout the year in Cervinia, as summer skiing takes places on the glacier. Prices fall considerably during the summer months though.

Cervinia insider information

  • Check the Cervinia website for a host of useful tools for skiers, including a downloadable pdf of the piste map, webcams of the resort and a snow report.
  • Most skiers who visit Cervinia are keen to ski over the top of the mountain into the neighbouring Swiss resort of Zermatt. You can head over by chair lift. The journey is quite a long one, so be sure to leave enough time, so as not to get stranded on the wrong side. A taxi back, if you do, can be incredibly expensive.
