The capital of Corfu island, Corfu Town (Kerkya in Greek) is one of the most beautiful destinations in Greece. The town has a rich history, which is evident in its architecture – French, Venetian, Neapolitan, British and of course Greek. The old town became a Unesco world heritage site in 2007 and many travellers book flights to Corfu Town to wander through its winding alleyways and explore the castles, chapels and garden squares. The 16th century fortress is especially impressive and the fortifications round the town were said to need 10,000 people to man them. The town is also the only place on the island to have a cricket pitch – a relic of British rule.

There is plenty to see and to do here, from visiting churches to shopping and eating. The town is lively, with many restaurants and bars. It is also an ideal location from which to explore the rest of the island of Corfu. The main international airport is here, so flights to Corfu Town are easy to find.

Corfu Town Insider Information

  • Don’t expect to see or hear the word “Corfu” while you're there. The Greek name is Kerkyra (or Kerkira) both for the town itself, and for the island.
  • The patron saint of the island is St Spyridon (Ag Spiridon) who is said to have healed the town of the plague. His relics are held in the beautiful church of St Spiridon and his casket is paraded on Palm Sunday, Easter Saturday, August 11, and the first Sunday in November.
  • Visit Garitsa Bay where you can take refreshment in one of the local tavernas, and watch the locals playing boules.
  • Feta cheese, made from goat’s milk, is a well known favourite. Try kefalotiri which is a harder drier version of feta cheese and can be grated like parmesan.
