The port town of Falmouth is the best place in Jamaica to spend some time shopping. Located 20 miles away from the popular resort of Montego Bay, Falmouth is the perfect destination for a day away from the beach, buying some souvenirs and finding out a little about Jamaica's history. The Albert George Shopping and Historical Centre, located in Water Square, features craft stalls with items to buy as well as ancient artifacts dating back to the 1800s. Falmouth town centre is old and contains many museums, such as the former residence of slave owner John Tharp, or the townhouse of Edward Barret. The crocodile farm and the Greenwood Great House, where the famous poet Elizabeth Barret Browning once lived, welcome visitors on a daily basis.

Kingston flights to Falmouth are the easiest way to reach the resort town. Once here, travel by boat, bike or let your feet take you anywhere you need to go at this remote resort getaway.

Falmouth Insider Information

  • Wander down Market Street which has the best collection of buildings from the sugar (and slave) boom in the 18th century.
  • Visit Jamaica Safari Village to see captive bred Jamaican crocodiles which start small and cute and grow to a massive two metres long. There is also a childrens’ petting zoo to get close to the animals you would prefer to be close to.
  • Relax in the warm sea by the white sand and look out for the manatee. Although they look strange they are completely harmless creatures and even vegetarian. Despite being fairly ugly they are thought to be the origins of all those myths about mermaids.
