Fiji’s official currency is the Fijian dollar, which breaks down into 100 cents. Major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, but ATMs only accept some international cards. Banks and exchange bureaus found all over the islands can exchange currency and traveller’s cheques.

The political and economic struggles in Fiji have increased the number of demonstrations and rallies in the country. Visitors should stay clear of these gatherings. Don’t wear expensive jewellery or carry large amounts of cash; the crime rate is high.

Waterborne diseases such as Leptospirosis, diarrhoea, dysentery and typhoid are present in Fiji. Stick to bottled water and don’t swim with open cuts or walk barefoot where farm animals bathe. You don’t need any vaccinations to enter the country, but you’ll need to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’ve stayed overnight in an infected area in the last ten days. Between November and April dengue fever is a serious risk, so protect yourself by wearing long-sleeves and pants and using insect repellent.
