Foreign currency is often accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops, and you can change money at the airport any time of day. Major credit cards are usually accepted at most hotels and restaurants and many shops.

The international country code is 356. To call another country from Malta, dial 00 followed by the appropriate country code (0044 for the UK for example). You can make international and local calls from hotel rooms, and most hotels have faxing and Internet capabilities. There are Internet cafes in the main towns and tourist resorts.

Hotels expect 15 per cent tips while restaurants expect 10 per cent, if there aren’t any service charges on the bill. Taxi drivers and most other services should be tipped about 10 per cent.

Malta is very safe. However, it's best to keep your wits about you as there have been reports of petty theft from parked cars or purse-snatchings. Be careful driving on the roads, as conditions are poor.

Food and water are safe to consume in Malta, and there are no health risks in travelling to the country. Make sure you have an EHIC card and adequate health insurance. If you’re coming from an area infected with yellow fever, you will need a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
