Duomo (Cathedral)
Milan’s Duomo is the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. The construction took some time; it started in 1386 and was finally completed in 1809. The cathedral boasts 3,400 statues, 135 spires and 96 gargoyles. The church has five aisles and can seat up to 40,000 people at once. On a sunny day the church’s interior is lit up by a colourful patchwork of stained glass windows. Every May and September the church displays a nail from Christ’s cross. Across the Duomo’s piazza you can explore the cathedral’s treasures in the Palazzo Reale’s Museo del Duomo. The Palazzo also houses the Museo d’Arte Contomporanea, a collection of Italian Futurist art.
