The official currency is the rupee, which breaks down into 100 cents. Credit cards are widely accepted. Rupees can only be purchased at banks, authorised money dealers at Seychelles International Airport or with the hotel cashiers. It is illegal to change money elsewhere. ATMs are located at major banks on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue and at airports.
The international country code is 248. You can usually get a direct phone line to a foreign country at your hotel. Most Internet cafes are located in Victoria and hotels often provide Internet access for their guests.
A service charge of between 5 and 10 per cent is usually included in bills. It’s not customary to tip extra, but travellers may do so at their discretion.
Most visitors enjoy trouble-free stays in the Seychelles, but there have been reports of theft and attacks on visitors.
There are no vaccination requirements for the Seychelles, but it’s a good idea to get immunised against typhoid and hepatitis A. Victoria has a hospital and some private clinics, but facilities are limited elsewhere. Make sure your travel insurance includes medical coverage. Supplies are limited and expensive, so bring enough sunscreen, insect repellent and medication to avoid stomach upsets. Guard yourself against mosquitoes, especially during the rainy months, when the risk of dengue fever and the Chikungunya virus increases. It’s a good idea to stick to bottled water, and you should always make sure to peel fruit and vegetables and cook meat thoroughly before eating.
The electrical current is 220 to 240 volts AC, 50Hz (UK-style, three-pinned plugs).
