English is the official language, however St. Lucian Creole is spoken throughout the island.

The official currency is the East Caribbean dollar. The US dollar is widely accepted too and gets a good exchange rate. Larger hotels, restaurants and shops accept the major credit cards. ATMs are available in Rodney Bay, Castries, Vieux Fort and Soufriere. Some hotels will change money for you, but there are also exchange bureaux in Castries.

Most travellers enjoy trouble-free stays, but you should always use common sense to prevent theft. Avoid isolated areas and beaches after dark. The hurricane season is June to November, and it's a good idea to keep an eye on weather reports.

If you’re coming from a country infected with yellow fever, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. St. Lucia has few health risks, but you should protect yourself against mosquitoes, which can carry dengue fever. HIV/AIDS is also common. Make sure you have adequate travel insurance as medical costs can be very high.
