Located on the east coast of Sicily, on the Monte Tauro, the beautiful city of Taormina has views westwards to the spectacular Mount Etna and eastwards to the sea. The quaint cobbled streets of the town are framed by churches, restaurants and a plethora of upmarket boutique shops. Narrow alleyways peel off the main thoroughfares, with tantalising views of streetside stalls selling lemons, bougainvillea strewn piazzas and restaurant terraces and the sparkling sea at the end. Along with the food, drink and shopping, holidaymakers book flights to Taormina for the sightseeing. One of the biggest draws is the old Roman amphitheatre; around which tourists flock at dusk, to see the amphitheatre and Mount Etna silhouetted by the setting sun.

There are no direct flights to Taormina, but numerous airlines fly to Palermo, and a few to the closer Catania Fontanarossa. Transfer time from either is brief, but it is wise to hire a car in order to see the stunning surrounding area with ease. There are also ferries from Reggio di Calabria on the mainland across to Messina.

When to Fly to Taormina

Peak season:

The summer months are the most popular with tourists arriving in droves to see the beautiful city . Bear in mind though that, while soaring temperatures are wonderful for the beaches, the warmth while pounding the streets sightseeing can be overwhelming. Travel during the Spring and Autumn months (April and May or late September and October) affords cheaper flights to Taormina and cooler temperatures.

Off season:

Fewer holidaymakers arrive in the city during the winter months and some hotels and restaurants may close for the off season.

Taormina Insider Information

  • Wander among the alleyways and flower-filled balconies in Taormina, where every so often you will catch sight of Mount Etna or the sea below.
  • As Taormina is Sicily’s most beautiful town, it gets very crowded in high season. If the prices seem too steep think about staying in nearby Giardini-Naxos and taking the bus every day.
  • Visit the remains of Teatro Greco up above the town. This Greek/Roman ruin is easy to find. Stop afterwards at a café in Piazza IX Aprile or the main street Corso Umbierto 1.
