Hofburg
The Austrian Hapsburgs lived in the Hofburg Palace, or Imperial Palace, for more than 600 years. Today’s enormous structure began in the 13th century and was added to by every generation after that. The palace houses the president’s offices, as well as 22 separate museums, the National Library and a 14th-century Augustinian church. If you visit the Royal Chapel on a Sunday, you can hear the Vienna Boy’s Choir sing Mass as they have done since 1498. The site is massive, so allow yourself several days to explore everything or be selective. One of the most popular museums, the Kaiserappartements, offers tours of the Kaiser’s apartments.
