Windermere is the bustling town a few miles away from the east side of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It is a popular base for tourists and walkers, not least for its many shops and tea rooms. Accommodation is plentiful whether in the well-known youth hostel, self-contained accommodation or in one of the many hotels. Due to its popularity, though, it is wise book ahead. The nearby town Bowness-on-Windermere is directly situated on the lake and is the point for trips on the lake in steamers and launches.
At 19km (12 miles) long, Lake Windermere is England’s largest natural lake. The beauty of the lake and surrounding area have inspired many artists and poets over the centuries and still does today. Poet William Wordsworth lived in nearby Grasmere at the north end of the lake, and Beatrix Potter, author and illustrator of the well-loved childrens’ stories, lived at Hill Top Farm which is now owned by the National Trust and is the most popular literary shrine in England.
