France’s oldest ski resort, Alpe d’Huez, began as a silver and coal mining village that grew into the world’s largest ski areas. After hosting the bobsleigh race in the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics, Alpe d’Huez was suddenly put on the map; its facilities were improved and it became what it is today: the most well-rounded ski resort in Europe.
The resort is divided into three main ‘quartiers’ - Quartier des Vieil Alpe, Quartier des Bergers and Quartier des Jeux. The sector with the most charm is Quartier des Vieil Alpe which still has many old building and family-run restaurants and shops. Quartier des Jeux is the livelier sector where all the bars and shops are while Quartier Bergers is known as the ‘modern’ part of Alpe d’Huez.
With 86 lifts, 154 miles of pistes set over an enormous area of 24 acres, the resort never feels crowded, even during peak season and snow is almost always guaranteed because of its high altitude. And skiers and snowboarders of all levels won’t have a problem choosing a suitable run for their abilities. But the area isn’t just a winter resort, travellers book flights to Alpe d’Huez in summer to visit the Ecrin National Park and the charming Oisans villages.
