*Special Note: Hurricane Katrina. One of the worst and most costly hurricanes ever to hit the United States, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast on 30 August 2005, causing extensive damage and flooding along the coast, particularly in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The communities along the southern Gulf Coast have been declared Federal Disaster Areas, and all coastal resorts and casinos in southern Mississippi have been closed.*
