Long before Courchevel became fashionable, skiing aficionados looking for an ultra chic, cosmopolitan ski resort headed to the exclusive French resort of Megeve in the Haute-Savoie mountains. Made famous by the Rothschild family who built the renowned Mont d'Arbois hotel, Megeve has had a celebrity following ever since the early 1900s.
But there’s more to Megeve than rubbing shoulders with the glitterati, serious skiers will revel in the downhill runs and cross-country skiing. Rochebrune, Mont d’Arbois and Le Jaillet are the three main ski areas. Beginners won’t feel intimidated here since there are plenty of nursery slopes in each of the three areas while intermediate and advanced skiers can head straight to the steep slopes of Mont d’Arbois.
Like most Alpine ski resorts with a quaint village centre, Megeve’s is no exception. Centred around a medieval 13th-century church tower, the romantic village boasts exceptional restaurants (including several Michelin-starred ones), lively bars and high-end boutiques and hotels.
While there are no direct flights to Megeve, travellers have a choice of flying into Geneva or Chambery. Megeve is under two hours by car from both resorts.
