Home to the world famous Notre Dame University, the northern Indiana city of South Bend is the state’s fourth largest. Many major companies also make their home in South Bend, but whether you’re visiting for school, work or pleasure, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in South Bend.
Lined by the tranquil banks of the St. Joseph River, South Bend welcomes visitors with its long history, diverse cultural offerings and world-class dining and entertainment options.
When it comes to digging into the city, it’s best to start at the beginning. History abounds at destinations like the Studebaker National Museum, where more than 150 years of automobile history is on display, and the South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Centre at The Natatorium, where the history of social justice is memorialised. Meanwhile, the Military Honor Park and Museum pays tribute to the armed service men and women who have long served the country.
Arts and entertainment are also plentiful in the home of the Fighting Irish. The South Bend Museum of Art is popular for its historical and contemporary exhibits, while the Snite Museum of Art is considered one of the top museums in America when it comes to university art. The historic Morris Performing Arts Centre and Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Centre are both top picks when it comes to enjoying live performances in the city.
Those who want to explore the outdoors can enjoy biking by the river, golfing on one of South Bend’s courses or exploring the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Also worth a wander is the Shiojiri Niwa Japanese Gardens, a spectacular example of blooming beauty in the heart of South Bend.
There is a public transportation system that services most of South Bend, making it possible to get around the city using only buses or the trolley. Taxis can also be arranged by telephone, but as with most American cities, many travelers find it easiest to rent a car to get around.
The city is most easily reached by South Bend Airport (SBN), which is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of the city centre. There is a local bus system that is connected to the airport, as well as a public trolley system that runs limited routes into the city. Several taxi companies operate out of South Bend Airport, and major car rental agencies are also onsite for rentals.
