Santa Fe is a haven for artists of all persuasions. Home to more than 250 art galleries and hundreds of artist studios there is no shortage of creativity in this town. From the grand pictures hanging in the Georgia O’Keefe Museum to the one-of-a-kind pottery and paintings in smaller studios, the artist’s eye is everywhere in Santa Fe.
As the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe has a lot to offer. Located just 97km from Albuquerque, flights to Santa Fe are easy to book and travellers to Santa Fe have endless day-trip options. It’s the oldest capital in the US and offers centuries of history. Many visitors book Santa Fe flights for a lesson in family lineage – only a few hours away are Indian pueblos where travellers can learn about specific tribes and environments. Or, take a trip to the historic centre to research ancestry from Indian tribes. Santa Fe was built on Native American roots, but the city’s unique European feel keeps visitors of all cultures coming back for more.
Santa Fe enjoys a temperate seasonal climate with about 300 days of sunshine a year. Summer (June to August) temperatures seldom exceed 30 degrees and a few inches of rain falls. Around 13cm of snow falls during the winter (December to February), but temperatures seldom drop below freezing. In general the weather is dry and mild and humidity is low.
The downtown and historic areas of Santa Fe are pretty compact and easy to get around on foot. The Santa Fe Trails buses travel over seven routes from the city’s centre to outlying sights. The buses run from 6am to 10pm during the week, from 8am to 8pm on Saturday, with limited service on Sundays. Route 10 is a convenient path for tourists who can stop at the museums on the Old Santa Fe Trail. Bikes are another great way to get around, but for longer distances you can take a taxi, charter van or rental car.
