Guyana’s capital is located right on the stunning coastline, and both the coast and the city itself offer a variety of brilliant attractions for the visitors. Head down to the Guyana National Museum if you want to learn about the fascinating history of the country. The Promenade Gardens in the town centre are an elegant place to take a stroll or have a picnic as they are filled with pleasant walkways and beautiful flowers, shrubs, and trees. If you want to enjoy the best view over Georgetown and its environs, then why not climb to the top of the Georgetown Lighthouse? This towering candy-striped landmark will enable you to look out far and wide over the sea, the beaches, the city, and the wilderness beyond. Visit Stabroek Market for a buzzing atmosphere and to pick up some souvenirs and natural produce, and pop in to the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology to learn more about traditional Amerindian ways of life. There are also various adventure day tours on offer that will take you out into the jungle and the riverbanks populated with amazing native animals and birds: a nature photographer’s dream.
When it comes to transport in Guyana, taxis or hire cars (there are kiosks in town and at the airport) are generally your best bet, as railways and buses are somewhat limited. It is the law in Georgetown that all taxi cabs must be painted yellow, so it will be easy for you to recognise them on the city streets. Taxis in Georgetown all operate according to a standard fare which is generally quite well regulated. If in doubt, though, just agree the fee with your driver before you embark on your journey.
Cheddi Jagan International Airport is the key airport in Guyana, and it is located 25.5 miles (41 km) to the south of Georgetown. Take a taxi or a hire car to the town centre, or hop on an airport bus if you prefer. You could also get a domestic flight to Ogle Airport, which is situated just 3.7 miles (6 km) from Georgetown, if that fits in with your schedule more easily.
