Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is just 18km (11 miles) from central Izmir. The airport is relatively new – the International Terminal was completed in 2006.

Izmir’s airport has a modest but varied selection of shops and dining options, useful for passengers who may endure notoriously long check-in times during peak travel times.

Cheap flights are usually available on IZair, SunExpress and Onur Air, which all use the airport as a regional hub. There are also a number of charter companies offering flights to Izmir Airport as well as some low-cost carriers.

Izmir Airport is the perfect gateway to the Gulf of Izmir on Turkey’s Aegean coast. The coast is home to a number of popular resorts and holiday attractions and Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is a great way to get to the coast without having to deal with the hustle and bustle of flying through Istanbul.

Terminal Transfer

The International Terminal and Domestic Terminals are separate buildings, but are connected via walkways, making it an easy walk between the terminals.

Getting into Town

Train: Both the Turkish state railway trains and local IzBan (metro) trains stop at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport. Roughly 14 state railway trains depart from Izmir Airport Station each day. The cheapest train tickets available are YTL 4.50 (approximately £1.60), but tickets on trains with air conditioning and reclining seats are slightly more. IzBan trains run every 12 minutes during peak times, but every 24 minutes during off-peak periods. Disposable card tickets can be bought at the station and can generally be re-used for ferries and buses in the city. The airport station is called Havalimani Station and it is located in the Domestic Terminal. Passengers coming from the International Terminal can get to the train station via the car park attached to the International Terminal.

Bus: Turkish Airlines runs the Havas airport shuttle bus between the airport and its offices in town. The shuttle runs at 20, 35 and 60-minute intervals throughout the day, with frequent departures during peak hours and less frequently at night. The Havas shuttle costs YTL 10 (£3.50) for the 60-minute trip into town. The fare goes up to YTL 12.50 (£4.40) between 12am and 6am. Havas buses are generally reserved for passengers travelling on AtlasJet, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Air, Onur Air and Sun Express, but passengers travelling on other airlines are able to use the bus when there are spare seats. Local buses No. 200, 202 and 204 have services from Izmir Airport. Route 204 is the most useful of the public buses as it runs between the airport and Izmir’s Metro Bus Station. Public buses cost YTL 6.50 (£2.30), but once you’re in town you can buy a Kentcard for YTL 7 (£2.50) and then load money onto the card, bus users paying with a Kentcard are only charged YTL 2.50 (about £0.90).

Taxis: Taxis can be caught outside both terminals. Passengers will need to bargain for the best fare. Fares increase between midnight and 6am. Taxi fares range from YTL 30 to YTL 50 (£10-£17), but taxi touts generally try to convince passengers to pay YTL 60 (£21). Passengers staying at one of the larger hotels should check to see whether their hotel offers free airport transfers as many offer this service.
