London City Airport is London’s fifth busiest airport, serving around 3.6 million passengers each year. It’s main passengers are business travellers due to its proximity to London’s financial district. It is busier during winter months when the more popular airlines fly to ski resort destinations.

London City lies about 6 miles east of London and can be accessed by all major forms of public transport:

Docklands Light Railway (DLR): A fast Docklands Light Railway service links the airport to London’s Underground and national rail stations.  The DLR departs London City Airport every 8 to 15 minutes, with journey times of less than 7 minutes to Canning Town which is on the Jubilee Underground line.  The first service from London City Airport DLR Station is 5:33am and the last service is at 12:27am.

Oyster cards and tickets for the London Transport system can be purchased at the DLR counter adjacent to the Airport Terminal.

For passengers travelling out of London, the closest National Rail stations are London Bridge, Waterloo and Stratford International. All three stations can also be reached via the Jubilee line from Canning Town.

Bus and Coach: London Buses serve the airport with numbers 473 to Stratford (via Plaistow and North Woolwich) and 474 to Canning Town via Beckton and East Ham.

Uber: Flat-rate fares are no longer available to Uber customers travelling to London airports. Until recently the company offered a series of set fares trips to London airports but Uber  now calculates fares based on time and distance rates.  Expect to pay approximately £9 for an 12 minute journey to Canary Wary in good traffic conditions.

Taxis: London City Airport taxi booking service operates during flight hours (05:30 -22:00 weekdays). For a trip to City of London, expect to pay around £25. You can also use the online  tool to book a licensed minicab for pick up and drop off.

Parking Fees: If you plan to drive to the airport, there is a selection of private lots where you can leave your car. Pre-booked prices can go as low as £47.87 per week. London City Airport also offers its own service with daily rates starting at £34.65. Passengers can use the online table here to determine their fee. Note that road congestion charges may also apply on top of your parking fee.

Checking-In

Liquids
Baby Milk and Medicine
Electronic Passport Exit

Check-in desks are located on the ground floor of the Terminal concourse, on the right hand side as you enter the building.

British Airlines passengers travelling to New York with hand luggage only can check-in 15 minutes before their flight is due to depart.

CityJet, Air France and KLM passengers with hand luggage only can also check-in 15 minutes before their flight is due to depart,  and 30 minutes prior to departure  with checked in luggage.

For all other passengers, your airline will be able to confirm the latest check-in times. Passengers are able to check-in hold baggage two hours before their flight is due to depart.

Liquids

Liquids may only be carried in containers holding 100ml or less. They must be carried separately in a single plastic bag which is:

  • Transparent anda name=”bab”> resealable
  • No larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in)
  • Able to close properly with all the items inside

Liquids in containers over 100ml will not be permitted through security. You will need to pack them in your hold baggage instead.

Baby Milk and Medicine

If you are travelling with a baby or infant, an exception to the above rule will apply, but you can carry only what liquids you will need for your journey.

The same applies to liquid medication – you can only carry what you need during the course of your flight. All medication should be accompanied by documentary proof of authenticity, such as a prescription or letter from a doctor.

Liquid medication that is not required on the flight should be carried as hold luggage.

Electronic Passport Exit

If you have a new biometric ‘chipped’ passport, you can use the eleven automated ePassport gates instead of having your passport checked by a Border Force officer. This means you can avoid the queues and get through passport control more quickly.

You can use the gates if you are a passport holder of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) – including the UK – or Switzerland; if you have the EEA chip logo on your passport and if you are over 18.

You cannot use the gates with a national identity card. Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the European Union (EU) but citizens of these countries have the same rights to enter, live in and work in the United Kingdom as EU citizens.
