The history of Varna International Airport goes back to 1916, when it was just two sheds set up for mail flights to what was already a Bulgarian maritime hub. Although Varna is still considered a small airport by today’s standards, it has grown tremendously into five terminals that together handle more than 1.2 million passengers per year.

Few routes include stopovers in Varna, so flights to Varna International Airport are how most people access the Bulgarian beach resorts of the Black Sea coast, including Golden Sands and Sunny Beach.

Airport services are efficient and the staff is friendly, so you can be confident that your Bulgarian holiday will start and end smoothly.

From 15 October 2011 until 28 February 2012, Varna airport will be closed for a reconstruction of the runaway

Getting into Town

Train: There is no train or subway service to Varna Airport.

Bus: Bus No. 409 goes from the airport to the city centre by way of the Mall of Varna and Golden Sands resort. The bus stops just outside of Terminal 1, and the fare is between BGN 1 and BGN 3 (about £0.40 to £1.30) depending on how many zones you travel through. From the centre of Varna it is fairly easy to take buses to other nearby resorts, including St Constantine and Helena, Sunny Day, The Riviera, and Euxinograde.

Taxi: There is a taxi rank in front of the departures area of Terminal 1. Taxis into town take about 15 minutes to get there, and cost anywhere from BGN 7 to BGN 15 (£3 to £6.50) depending on traffic.
