Speeding up check-in times should be a priority for the aviation industry, according to the transport select committee of MPs.

In a report into passengers’ experience of air travel, the committee found that hand luggage restrictions and extra searches had made air travel more uncomfortable and that more needed to be done to improve the situation.

“Speeding up check-in times and reducing the security queue should be a priority,” the report stated, claiming that long queues could pose security threats themselves.

The committee’s chairman, Gwyneth Dunwoody, noted that “security is the issue which currently has the most significant impact on passengers’ experience of air travel”.

The situation is being exacerbated at the current time because the dismal weather in Britain is encouraging even more people to take cheap flights abroad.

Other recommendations made by the committee include ensuring airlines feature additional costs in headline fares, conducting a review of car parking charges at airports and putting better systems in place to prevent baggage loss.
