With Christmas coming up, families up and down the country will be planning a festive getaway – and preparing themselves for an argument or two.

That’s according to new research from MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, a discount website, which claims that families start fighting a mere 25 minutes into their holiday.

It seems that barely have the bags been packed, passports been checked and first leg of travel begun that families are squabbling over something.

With the stress that travelling can bring, it is hardly surprising that some families find their patience running thin. The research found that one of the most common reasons for these early arguments is running late for flights.

A whopping 69 per cent of parents surveyed said their family fought while on holiday, with most arguments starting with Mum or Dad.

While it might be easy to blame the kids for the family feuds, more than half of parents said the argument was usually triggered by themselves or their partner.

Only a third of parents claimed their children were the source of most arguments, showing that youngsters are perhaps a little less prone to travel-related stress. Either that or they’re too busy playing their Nintendo DS.

After running late, the second most common cause of holiday “barneys” was forgetting something, with 42 per cent of parents citing this reason.

Other common reasons included disagreements over holiday activities and where to eat, and simply the pressure of spending too much time together.

Yet it’s not just families who enjoy a bust-up or two while away. Research earlier this year revealed that 79 per cent of couples have at least two major arguments while on a two-week holiday.

The main reasons cited by fighting couples included disagreements over holiday activities and, perhaps unsurprisingly, men’s roving eyes at the beach and by the pool.
