Waiting times at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) just got a whole lot more bearable! A public – and free! – Wi-Fi service has just gone live at the airport (the beautiful featured image is by JefferyTurner).

Passengers can now use the web on portable devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets for sessions lasting up to 45 minutes free of charge. Anyone wishing to connect for longer can buy a premium service that lasts for one hour ($4.95, about £3) a 24-hour period ($7.95, about £5).

It’s available in most public areas of the airport.

LAX is the sixth-busiest airport in the world and the third in the United States (Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport and O’Hare International Airport outside Chicago are first and second). Neither Hartsfield nor O’Hare currently offer a free, unrestricted Wi-Fi Internet access.

Last year more than 61 million people passed through the airport. More than 600 flights depart for 91 cities across the US daily, while each week more than 1,000 flights fly non-stop to 58 cities in 32 countries on nearly 75 air carriers.

Before you look at these fantastic images of LAX, have a look at what an hour’s Wi-Fi costs at airports in the UK and Ireland.
