Gatwick Express, the non-stop train service between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Train Station, is testing new ticket gates in a bid to speed up boarding times.

The new ticket gates will be installed at both Gatwick Airport train station and London Victoria train station, and will be staffed by Gatwick Express Customer Service Hosts.

The new gates to Gatwick Express (www.gatwickexpress.com) platforms mean that, from Monday, 12 December, there will no longer be an option for passengers to buy tickets onboard the service.

Instead, customers will have to purchase tickets beforehand, either online or at ticket machines and ticket offices at Gatwick and Victoria.

As well as new gates and new customer service staff, Gatwick Express will also be installing eight new machines at Gatwick train station and Victoria Station.

The new gates will be fully operational from 31 December, and will able to accept smartcard technology in the near future.

The Gatwick Express service runs every 15 minutes between Gatwick and Victoria, with a journey time of 30 minutes. The improvements to the service are the latest in a long line of developments at Gatwick.

Following a £1.2 billion investment programme, Gatwick has been improving services throughout the airport.

This includes a £72-million redevelopment of the North Terminal, which re-opened recently. The new look terminal features additional check-in and baggage reclaim capacity for those taking flights. The introduction of 18 new check-in desks brings the total to 144 for the terminal, 70 of which are self service.

“We continued to implement our £1.2 billion investment programme during this period, investing in excess of £20 million each month to deliver improved facilities for our passengers and airlines,” said Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive Officer of Gatwick Airport.

“The ‘front door’ to the North Terminal is now more spacious and modern with more self service check-in options.”
