With all its economic uncertainty, holidays to Greece aren’t as popular as they used to be. It’s a real shame, as the Mediterranean country has plenty to offer in the way of history, culture and the arts.

One prime example of this is an exhibition which is currently being held at Benaki Museum in Athens – the country’s largest independent museum.

The Greek Monsters exhibition, put together by the award-winning design group Beetroot, has been running since April 27 and is coming to a close later this month.

Featuring installations, stencil graffiti, sculptures and even some audio-visual technology, the Greek Monsters exhibition is a unique show that only a design house like Beetroot could pull off.

Established in 2000, the Greek design group has been coming up with innovative and creative design concepts that have been recognised around the world.

The Greek Monsters exhibition is no different. Put together to celebrate Beetroot’s award for Agency of the Year at the red-dot Communication Design Awards last year, the exhibition was first housed in Berlin.

Beetroot was the first design group from outside of Germany to win the prestigious red dot award, and created the exhibition in response.

The Berlin show featured three separate 3D sculptures, including a three metre high Minotaur, an idol of a Cyclops and a Stymphalian Birds installation.

The Greek Monsters have since come home to Athens, with Beetroot adding a raft of new pieces to create an all-encompassing and truly unique exhibition.

Beetroot has said the show is a light-hearted response to the negative perception of Greece in Europe and around the world at the moment. It chose monsters from Greek mythology to represent this, as their role is both as an offender and victim.

The Greek Monsters exhibition is running at the Benaki Museum until July 29. So if you are in Athens this month, try not to miss this creative and powerful show.
