Following the political unrest earlier this year in Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco, tour operators have started discounting their rates in an attempt to encourage Britons to return.

According to a recent report in The Telegraph, there are bargains to be had from some of the country’s most prominent tour operators including the Co-operative Travel, Tui Travel and Abercrombie and Kent.

Mike Greenacre, the Co-operative Travel MD, told the newspaper that holidays in Egypt are, on average, 10 per cent cheaper now. Tui Travel has also cut the cost of hols.

In addition, several hotels are offering sweeteners such as free room upgrades, discounted meals and even free nights. See what Cheapflights’ staff picks are for today by visiting Handpicked Travel Deals; they include Sharm El Sheikh holidays.

Meanwhile, two months after its 9.0 magnitude earthquake, Japan is broadcasting the message that it is open to tourists again. AFP reports that Japanese business leaders told a gathering of high-level tourism and travel executives in Las Vegas that the country is “safe”.

Atsutoshi Nishida, the chairman of Toshiba, told the group: “I would like to say: Japan is safe.”

The Japanese Tourism Agency has revealed plummeting visitor figures since March 11. There was a drop of more than 50 per cent in the number of visitors arriving on flights to Japan in the weeks following the earthquake and leisure travel rates have fallen by 90 per cent.
