Family and friends are travellers’ favourite holiday companions when it comes to getting away this Christmas.

A poll carried out by British Airways this week has revealed the top people we want to spend a Christmas getaway with, as well as the top destinations for the festive season.

The poll, carried out via British Airways’ Facebook page, has revealed that family and partners are the top travel companions, with 70 per cent of people choosing relatives or their other half.

Friends were next on the list, with 15 per cent of people choosing them as their number one choice for Christmas company.

Pets also featured in the top five, with some people opting for animals over humans. A surprising 2 per cent of people said they would most want to spend Christmas with their pet.

“It’s not altogether surprising that family topped the poll but we were surprised to see pets making the top five,” said Richard Bowden, British Airways’ digital marketing innovation manager.

In terms of top Christmas holiday destinations, winter wonderlands topped the list. The UK, US and Canada were in the top five, as people dream of a white Christmas.

Warmer destinations were not far behind – both Australia and Brazil also made the top five.

“We suspect the trend for cold weather will reverse come the new year, with warmer climes beckoning as a ‘pick me up’ after the excesses of the Christmas period so now’s the time to start thinking about that perfect holiday destination for 2012,” Mr Bowden added.

For passengers still wondering what to get loved ones for Christmas this year, British Airways is offering a range of gift ideas that can be bought online or onboard.

These include photos and posters of iconic images from the early days of the aviation industry, as well as vouchers for a ride in BA’s flight simulator.
