Castles made of sand, as Jimi Hendrix observed, melt into the sea eventually. So if you want to see the best of the best, you need to get yourself to one of these incredible sandcastle festivals dotted around the world.

Copenhagen International Sand Sculpture Festival – Copenhagen, Denmark

Taking place on Ofelia Beach in the heart of Denmark’s capital, this annual sand spectacular is surrounded by the port and sights such as The Royal Playhouse.

The competition period when master crafters build their entries lasts eight days in May, but the displays stay viewable to the public until August.

Sandcastle Days – South Padre Island, Texas, USA

This yearly five-day sand fest will be enjoying its 26th year in 2013. As it’s in Texas, there is no shortage of grilled food in the accompanying restaurants and bars onsite.

FIESA – Algarve, Portugal

One of the largest sand festivals in the world, the exhibition area of FIESA (Festival Internacional De Escultura Em Areia) is a whopping 15,000m2. The sculptures are left on display for a remarkable five months, and are lit up at night too for those making nocturnal visits.
