Shopping and the weather are the main reasons people go on holiday in the winter months, a poll by British Airways has found.

The airline carried out a poll on Facebook to find out where the public would most like to visit this winter.

London came top of the poll, with its shopping facilities being the main draw for holidaymakers. The Caribbean came a close second, as people try to escape to some hot and sunny weather over the winter.

The other top winter destinations were Brazil, which came third in the poll, followed by New York in fourth place. Cape Town in South Africa rounded off the top five.

Respondents also said that “anywhere warm and sunny” would suit them for a winter break.

“London is a fantastic winter destination, with great shopping and plenty to do for both residents and overseas visitors. Equally, the thought of relaxing on a stunning beach, in the warm and friendly Caribbean is a real draw as the winter closes in,” said Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK & Ireland sales.

As well as good shopping and warm weather, other reasons people gave for travelling at winter included visiting friends and family, and returning home for Christmas.

Mr Tams added: “We’ve had a great response to our Facebook poll which just shows how exciting and inspiring travel continues to be.”

British Airways announced recently that it is offering low fares to some of its most exotic locations, for those keen to escape the harsh winter weather.

The airline’s World Traveller and World Traveller Plus fares from Gatwick Airport to ten destinations in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean have been cut by up to £127.

The biggest price cut is on a World Traveller return fare to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, which is down from £757 to £630. Book flights online now at ba.com.
