Almost two out of three passengers do not pay attention to the safety demonstrations on flights, a survey has revealed.
Research by Jetcost has found that 63 per cent of UK flyers do not bother to pay attention to flight safety demonstrations, with the majority deeming them unnecessary.
When asked if they listen to the demonstrations on flights, just over a quarter of passengers said they did, while a further 11 per cent said they sometimes paid attention.
Of those who said they didn’t pay attention, more than half said that the demonstrations were unnecessary; while a third said they thought they would be reminded of them in the case of a real emergency anyway.
And a further 12 per cent said that the safety demonstrations unnerved them, as they were nervous flyers. This 12 per cent said they felt it was best to ignore the possibility of having to put them into practice.
“Safety procedures are put in place on aircrafts for a reason, and it’s vital that even frequent flyers pay attention to demonstrations before take-off,” said Jerome Cohen-Scali, co-founder of Jetcost.
“While they can seem ‘unnecessary’ or even unnerving to watch for nervous flyers, they’re an important aspect of any flight, and are vital in ensuring that everyone on-board knows what to do in the rare case of an emergency.”
And it seems that other safety measures are also being ignored by passengers, with just over half saying they did not bother to find out where the emergency exits were when they boarded an aircraft.
On top of this, a third of passengers surveyed said they had no idea where the life jackets were stored on an aircraft.
Many passengers were also happy to throw caution to the wind when it came to airport security. More than a quarter of passengers said that there were too many security procedures at UK airports.
