For a brief period of the year, between the dry and rainy seasons (September through November), an otherwise ordinary looking river in the Meta region of Colombia transforms into a liquid rainbow.

Catch a glimpse of the spectacular phenomenon and you’ll quickly see why the Caño Cristales is often described as the most beautiful river in the world.

A dull green hue of the gives way to a cavalcade of rich reds, yellows, greens and blues as the riverbed algae found only in this part of Colombia blossoms in response to river depth falling to its trigger level.
