The Tall Ships is the third race this summer to culminate in an Irish port. The Volvo Ocean Race roared into Galway in July. The Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race called at Derry-Londonderry (UK City of Culture in 2013) and now it’s the turn of the Tall Ships, that have made their way from St Malo, France.

Racing across the Bay of Biscay to Lisbon, to Cadiz and A Coruna, they arrived in Dublin yesterday, (Thursday, August 23) to a proper Irish welcome.

There are almost 50 ships – from the majestic, square-rigged vessels to sloops, ketches, yawls and schooners.

The Tall Ships Races 2012 – Dublin event is four days of free, family-friendly festival fun (August 23 to 26). Have a look at the schedule which includes a sailors’ parade, music, theatre and, on Sunday morning, a Parade of Sail as the ships make their way towards Liverpool, their next port.

If you’re in Dublin for the weekend, the Tall Ships berthing area is in the heart of the city along the North and South of the Quays.

You’ll come over all Horatio Hornblower (or Master and Commander but hopefully not Mutiny on the Bounty – that’s where our nautical knowledge runs out!) looking at these images, courtesy of The Tall Ships Races 2012 Dublin Event!
