Thomas Cook Airlines was formed in 2003 following a re-branding of the charter airline JMC Airlines, which began services in 2000. It is based in Manchester and services mostly leisure destinations, usually on a seasonal basis, in approximately 90 locations around the world. It currently flies around 6 million passengers. In 2015 it won both the European and World’s leading Charter Airline at the World Travel Awards.

Thomas Cook Hand Luggage Size

The standard hand luggage allowance is:

  •  6kg
  • 55cm x 40cm x 20cm

Note that at some UK airports, a charge for a Gate Bag is now applied. If you arrive at the boarding gate with more than one item of hand baggage (excluding airport shopping), the extra item/s will be taken and put into the hold. Depending on the route, a fee of £50.00 – £70.00 per bag will apply.

Thomas Cook Checked Luggage Size

Thomas Cooks Airlines structures its baggage allowance policy based on a passenger’s ticket class. The standard checked baggage allowance is:

  • 15kg (20kg on long haul flights and 23kg to the USA).

If you have booked a Flexible Trips package, your standard Baggage allowance can vary between 0kg to 25kg per person and will be displayed inside your holiday documents.

If you’re travelling with more than one person, you can combine your baggage allowance together as long as any one case does not exceed 30kg in weight (for lifting purposes). There are no size restrictions on checked-in baggage.

Your included baggage allowance is as follows:

Standard Package: 15kg Included (an extra 10kgs can be purchased)
Style Holidays: 20kg Included
Signature Holidays: 20kg Included
Long Haul: 20kg Included
Long Haul USA: 23kg Included
Premium: 30kg Included
Premium USA: 46kg included (Split over 2 x 23kg bags)
Flight Only: 0kg (baggage can purchased as an extra)
Hand Baggage: 6kg
Infant Baggage: 10kg

Note that if you plan to bring any liquids into the cabin, you can do so as long as they are stored in containers no bigger than 100ml and are carried in a clear, re-sealable plastic bags with maximum dimensions of 20 x 20cm. Each passenger can carry a maximum of 1000ml (e.g. 10 x 100ml).

Extra and Overweight Baggage Fees

You can pay to check-in extra bags online up to 8 hours ahead of departure. Paying after this time or at the airport incurs extra charges. The prices for pre-booked excess baggage (per zone) are as follows:

  • Zone 1: Balearics, Balkans, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal Mainland.

  • Zone 3: East Africa, United Arab Emirates, Asia, Caribbean, Central & South America.
  • Zone 4: Southern Africa, Indian Ocean.
  • Zone 5: USA, Canada, Puerto Rico.

Note that on USA flights, an extra 23kg piece can be purchased for £50, and that the above prices stated are only valid if the booking is made more than 30 days prior to your flight departure date. Baggage weighing over 32kg cannot be accepted due to health and safety regulations.

Sports Equipment, Musical Instruments and Special Luggage

Musical instruments and other special luggage items not suitable for the hold can be carried in the cabin as long as  they have been registered in advance and carriage has been confirmed. Otherwise you’ll need to pay the additional baggage fees outlined in the table above. Charges will apply for all sporting equipment.

Delayed, Damaged or Missing Luggage

If you note any damage to your baggage or its contents, you will need to report the damage to airport representatives before leaving the terminal building. The staff will complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and you will be given instructions regarding your claim. Your insurance company, if you are insured, should also be contacted. In cases of missing baggage that has been reported to the handling agent at the airport, in the UK or overseas, tracing action will begin immediately.

Once the PIR is completed, liability in the case of Damage or delay to Checked or Unchecked Baggage is limited to 1,131 SDRs per passenger unless you make a special declaration at check-in and pay any requisite fee, in which event liability is limited to the higher declared value. Liability for passenger delays is limited to 4,694 SDRs per passenger.

Mobile Boarding Passes

Mobile check-in is available between 24 hours and 2 hours before departure. You can check-in online using this portal by entering your booking details ahead of your flight.

You can choose to receive your boarding pass and show it on your mobile or tablet, or print it ready to show at the check-in kiosk. Ensure you check in at least 120 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.

Priority Boarding

The airline’s Priority Package is available from £10.00/€12.99 and can be booked up to 24 hours prior to departure. With the Priority Package, you can check-in directly at the Premium Class or dedicated Priority Counters. After your check-in, you can pass through the security check by using the “Priority Lane” at all participating airports, and then be among the first boarding the aircraft. At the arrival airport, your suitcase will be unloaded first and will be among the first on the carousel in the baggage claim area.

Flying with Children

Any child aged 2 years or over on the day of the return flight (or last flight sector) incurs the full adult fare since they will be required to occupy a seat. A charge also applies to infants under 2 years of age but infants cannot occupy their own seat. If a seat is required, the full adult fare is applicable.

A child younger than two years of age who will be travelling on your lap, is allocated the following items free of charge:

  •  10kg baggage allowance
  • 1 stroller/pushchair
  • 1 travel cot or a car seat (checked in to the hold)

Note that an infant does not have a hand baggage allowance. However, the accompanying parent/guardian is able to take infant food for consumption alongside their own hand baggage allowance.

Seating for Babies and Children

Child seats are to be checked into the hold. If you have reserved a seat for your infant, you will need to bring your car seat on board. The car/child seat must be able to fit between the armrests of the aircraft seat. Your child and the child seat need to be secured according to the seat manufacturer’s instructions.

Unaccompanied Children

Thomas Cooks Airlines does not accept unaccompanied children on flights. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years old or over.

If your child is aged between 14 and 17, you will need to contact the Sales and Service centre to book and complete a Young Persons Declaration form:

The unaccompanied minor in this age category will be given a free seat reservation in the front or rear section of the cabin.

Flying While Pregnant

Thomas Cooks Airlines  has a policy specifying the latest stage that pregnant women can take flights:

  • No later than the end of week 36 if pregnant with one baby; or
  • No later than the end of week 32 if pregnant with more than one child

A medical certificate is required for any pregnancy after the 28th week stage.

Senior Fares

Thomas Cooks Airlines does not offer any special fares specifically for seniors.

Travelling with Wheelchairs

You are required to give at least 48 hours in advance of your flight regarding the make, model, weight and lowest collapsed height of your wheelchair if you plan to take it on your journey. The dimensions of any mobility aid cannot exceed the following:

  • Width: 1.5m
  • Height: 1.2m
  • Length: 1.6m

Note that certain aircraft types may have larger dimensions than those shown above. So if your mobility aid is larger than these minimum dimensions, please contact the airline to discuss requirements.

You should arrive at least 90 minutes before your scheduled time of departure so staff can prepare your wheelchair for your flight.

Flying with Guide Dogs

Certified and Registered Guide / Hearing Dogs can be taken on board certain Thomas Cooks Airlines flights when accompanying a guest who has a vision or hearing impairment, provided that the dog is wearing their coat, and/or have their ID medallion on their collar, and the handler has their Handler ID.

An assistance dog can be carried by Thomas Cook Airlines from any UK airport to any European airport to which the airline operates. The service is also available on selected flights from Manchester to the USA.

When you request carriage of an assistance dog, you will need to provide a letter from your doctor with a diagnosis of your requirement for an assistance dog.. The letter must be on letter headed paper and be no older than one year from the date of your flight. To avoid quarantine in the UK, all animals must meet the criteria of PETS – the Pet Travel Scheme set out by DEFRA, the guidelines for which can be found here: www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk/how_dogs_help.html

Group Bookings

If you are planning to fly with a group and wish to be seated together, you can arrange bookings for 9 people via the online form here.

For ten or more people, you will need to contact the Sales directly on +44 (0) 871 895 0069. In your request, you will need to give the following information:

  • Name of the person to be contacted.
  • A daytime telephone number.
  • Number of passengers. (including children)
  • Flight dates.
  • Destination.

Pets

Each passenger may bring one dog or one cat weighing up to 6kg (including transportation container) into the passenger cabin or one dog or cat weighing up to 30kg (including transportation container) into the cargo hold.

Dogs in the cargo hold weighing more than 30kg have to be registered in advance. You can receive a quote by contacting the airline directly.

Note that the animal’s box must have a leak-proof base, absorbent material in the bottom, a door forming one side of the box – either hinged or sliding, and be big enough to allow your pet to lie down, turn around and stand up.

Seating

You can reserve a seat up until 77 hours prior to departure. Seat Reservation prices depend on your route and seat choice and starts from £7.00 one-way.

XL seats are also available. You can make a seat selection at the time of booking or add it to your existing booking through the Manage Booking facility.

Note that sometimes the airline may have to make changes on the day of departure that can result in withdrawal or changes to pre-booked flight services.

Credit Card

Credit card and  pre-paid card fees are charged at 1.5% of the transaction cost, the minimum and maximum fees applicable are shown below:

  • Short Haul: £1.00 –  £25.00
  • Medium Haul: £2.00 – £35.00
  • Long Haul: £5.00 – £50.00

Payment by debit card is free.

Travel Insurance

Cover is available for travel in the UK, Europe or Worldwide.

  • Single Trip Insurance is for one-off journeys of up to 365 days and can be booked up to 1 year in advance.
  • Annual Holiday Insurance is for unlimited trips for 1 year and can be purchased up to 31 days in advance.

When you take out a Single or Annual Multi Trip policy, you are able to add up to 7 travellers on a single policy.

Flight Change Fees

For long haul flights, the administration fee for flight cancellation is £50.00 per person, per sector, per change.

For short/medium haul flights, the fee is £35.00 per person, per sector, per change.

You must also pay any additional cost for your flight. Full cancellation fees apply if your flight is leaving within 25 hours (flight duration of 7 hours or less) or 80 hours (flight duration over 7 hours).

Flight Cancellation Policy

In case your flight has been delayed or cancelled, or you have been denied boarding on a flight due to overbooking, you may be entitled compensation according to EC-Regulations. If your flight is delayed by more than 4 hours on flights of 3,5000 kilometres, 3 hours in cases of all intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 kilometres, or more than 2 hours for flights of 1,500 kilometres or less, you have the right to the following:

  • Meals and refreshment in a reasonable relation to the waiting time.
  • Hotel accommodation where appropriate combined with potential transfer.
  • Two short telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails.

In the event of a cancellation of a flight for which you hold a confirmed reservation, you will be offered alternative transport and have the same rights to reimbursement and compensation. These rights are the same as denied boarding, which amounts to:

  • €250 for all flights of 1,500 kilometres or less.
  • €400 for all Intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 kilometres.
  • All other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres.
  • €600 for flights of more than 3,500 kilometres.

Lounges

Thomas Cooks Airlines offers lounge access from £13.50 at over 200 lounges and 120 airports worldwide. Complimentary refreshments and internet access is available. More info here.

In-Flight Refreshments

In-flight meals and drinks are available on Thomas Cooks Airlines flights starting from £6.50.

You can pre-order all in-flight meals as you book your flight or afterwards, in your travel agency or by telephone in the customer service centre up to at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure.

Meals are not sold on the plane. A limited on-board selection of snacks and beverages is available for purchase, however.

In-Flight Entertainment

Short Haul

If you’re flying off to one of our short or mid-haul destinations you’ll have a selection of popular TV shows and a range of music to choose from.

You can use the video and audio program with standard headphones, which are also available on board for £3.00/€3.50

Long Haul

If you are travelling with us on our long-haul A330 aircraft Premium you will receive complimentary access to the full entertainment Library of 30 movies, and over 50 hit TV shows.

Comprehensive Premium entertainment is available at no extra charge to Premium Class passengers.

Economy Class passengers will be able to watch a limited selection of content for free. An upgrade to the full library can be purchased on board for £6.00/ €8.00. All customers have access to our extensive audio library of 24 radio channels and over 3,500 songs from a wide selection of hit albums.
