The cheapest – and most expensive – countries for tourist taxes have been revealed in a study of popular destinations.

The study, carried out by Airport Parking and Hotels, compared the cost of visas and airport taxes in 21 holiday destinations that are favoured by British tourists.

It found that Australia is the most expensive for airport charges, with the country’s Passenger Movement Charge and Airport Passenger Service Charge setting tourists back a total of £56.40.

Australia is one of ten countries on the list that require a visa for entry, but it does not charge visitors for this apart from a service charge of £12.85.

China was found to be the most expensive country for visas, with a single-entry visa costing £30 along with an additional service charge of between £36 and £54.

In contrast, Dubai and Mauritius do not charge for a visa and provide these when visitors arrive in the country.

In terms of airport fees or departure charges, Kenya and Brazil were among the most expensive, with charges of £25.63 and £22.16 respectively.

Morocco was found to be the cheapest destinations for tourist taxes, as it does not require a visa for entry and charges a £2.20 airport security tax.

Other countries that have low airport charges include Canada with fees of £3.16 and India with fees of £4 – although the country does charge £30 for a visa.

In the majority of countries on the list, airport taxes and departure fees are included in the price of an airline ticket.

In Mauritius, however, holidaymakers are charged £10 when they leave the country, while in Canada some airports charge a departure fee.

The cost of a holiday in Spain has gone up for Brits – they must now pay a total of £14.40 after the Spanish government decided to increase taxes by £6 in a bid to reduce the country’s deficit.
