If your team is in the UEFA Champions League, here’s how to find cheap flights and travel:

  • As soon as you know where your team is playing, look at its website. There might be some form of subsidised travel.
  • If not, start searching and compare the cost of flights – or coaches, trains and ferries.
  • Check out airlines’ Twitter feeds (and their other social media networks such as Facebook and Google+) as they sometimes announce extra flights for fans travelling away. If they do, book as quickly as you can. Prices will  rise from the moment they announce extra capacity.
  • Nab your accommodation as quickly as you can, checking out your club and supporters’ club. There might be tie-ins or deals with accommodation providers.

And here’s how to stay safe while on tour:

  • Follow your club’s code of conduct. Violent or disorderly behaviour could result in a lengthy ban.
  • Carry Photo ID – a photocopy of your passport’s information page for example – with you at all times.
  • Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay.
  • Take out some travel insurance and get an European Health Insurance Card. The EHIC card entitles you to the same level of healthcare as locals. Unlike NHS care it may not be free.
  • Beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers in crowded areas – airport, public transport, around the grounds…
  • At the stadium, items that can be used as weapons (lighters, belt buckles, coins) may be confiscated. And if it’s a contentious tie, banners and flags may not be allowed either. Keep an eye on your club’s websites for guidance.
  • Visiting fans may be held back at the end of the match until home fans have dispersed so allow for that if you’re hoping for a quick getaway.
