Located on the western tip of the stunning island of Jamaica, Negril is a resort where tranquillity is very much the order of the day. For lovers of sand and surf it is a veritable paradise, with no less than seven miles of refreshingly unspoilt beaches on which to relax and unwind. The warm, crystal-clear waters of the beautifully calm Caribbean Sea are ideal for snorkelers and divers, with a wealth of underwater caves and coral reefs waiting to be explored.
As Negril is primarily a beach destination, the main activities here revolve around water sports. Parasailing, windsurfing and water-skiing are just some of the many water-based activities on offer. However, not all life in Negril is centred on the beach. Away from the lure of the sea, the Black River Safari gives you the opportunity to spot some of the wealth of exotic wildlife that makes its home here, such as birds, butterflies and crocodiles. On the same day as experiencing the Black River Safari, many people also visit the rum factory on the Appleton Estate and partake in a taste of one of Jamaica’s most famous exports.
As the sun sets in Negril, get ready to party on the beach as the sounds of live reggae music fill the air. If beach parties are not your thing, then there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the town to choose from, many serving local speciality dishes.
A number of minibuses and route taxis operate within the city and most can be flagged down in the street. Official taxis have red number plates and, even though they are regulated, it is always advisable to agree a fare before you enter the vehicle. Be aware of taxis that do not bear red number plates, as these are not official and in most cases you will be charged extortionate prices.
