Akron overview

Located in the Great Lakes region of the northern U.S.A., in the state of Ohio, Akron has much to offer visitors. The Akron Zoo offers a family friendly day out. Home to over 700 animals representing some 90 species, it is divided into six themed areas including Tiger Valley, Grizzly Ridge and Penguin Point. The zoo participates in breeding programmes to sustain endangered species and has rare snow leopards, Galapagos tortoises and Humboldt penguins. The Art Museum, opened in 1922, boasts a superb collection of works dating from 1850 to the present within its 1,900 sq metres of gallery space. The Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is a national historic landmark that is open to the public. This early 20th century 65-room Tudor style mansion is situated on a large estate filled with the most exquisite gardens. For a trip back into the past, a day spent at Hale Farm and Village is highly recommended. This living history museum recreates the America of the 1860s, with guides in period costume offering demonstrations of crafts such as glass blowing and candle making, along with a working blacksmith’s shop. For shows and concerts, Akron offers Lock 3 Park, a marvellous outdoor amphitheatre. Further entertainment can be enjoyed at the John S. Knight Centre and the gorgeously ornate Akron Civic Theatre. Fun filled days out for all the family can be enjoyed at the nearby Fun ‘n’ Stuff and Wildwater theme parks. Lovers of the great outdoors will find that the area adjacent to the city has ample opportunities for hiking, camping, horse riding and biking.

Getting around Akron

The city’s Metro RTA is the major public transport provider in the area. It has nearly 200 buses transporting six million passengers annually and offers a number of routes serving the Summit County and city areas. A delightful means of transport between Akron and Cleveland is offered by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which takes passengers through a beautiful national park.
