New Bern lies on the beautiful Atlantic plain area of the North Carolina coast in the region known as the Inner Banks. It was founded in 1710 by settlers from Switzerland and Germany lead by Baron Christoph von Graffenried. He came from the Swiss city of Bern and named New Bern after his hometown. Much of New Bern’s historic architecture is influenced by its Swiss and Germanic roots and there are three separate historic districts for you to explore. Royal Governor William Tryon designated the city a colonial capital, and his former New Bern home Tryon Palace dates from the 18th century. The beautifully restored building lies in 13 acres of parkland that also contains several other historic monuments and the new North Carolina History Centre, and is an essential stop for visitors.
New Bern is also known as the birth place of Pepsi Cola, one of the most famous drinks in the world. Kids will really enjoy learning about their favourite soft drink at The Birthplace of Pepsi and trying a Pepsi from an authentic soda fountain.
Take a break at Union Point Park which has extensive boardwalks and fabulous views over the spot where the two rivers meet. Completely surrounded by water, it’s a great place for canoeing and kayaking in New Bern, and there are two public boat launches as well as picnic areas and a children’s playground.
New Bern boasts lots of great shops and stores, plus restaurants, cafes and bars to appeal to every taste. With attractions that appeal to every age group and excellent deals on flights, New Bern is an exciting all year holiday destination.
The centre of New Bern is small enough to cover on foot easily and there is a local bus service that covers the main shopping and tourist areas as well as some out of town destinations. Taxis are very expensive in New Bern, so if you expect to be travelling frequently it is well worth considering a car rental.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is just 3 hours by road from New Bern and ideal for international travellers. You can then get a connecting flight to Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) which is just 3 miles (5 km) from the centre of New Bern. All the major car rental companies have outlets at the airport allowing you to easily hire a vehicle to drive into New Bern itself, and there are also shuttle taxi services available from outside the terminal. Although taxi fares tend to be fixed, it is best to check before getting into the car. Many New Bern hotels offer guests transportation to and from the airport but again, you should check before arrival.
