Evansville is a large city in the state of Indiana that is aptly known as “The River City”. Situated on an oxbow of the Ohio River, Evansville has an exciting variety of cultural, historical and family entertainment. The area has been inhabited by humans since 8,000 BCE and at Angel Mounds Historic Park located 8 miles (13 km) southeast of the city, you can walk around the ancient Native American site, featuring several earthen mounds. Evansville also has plenty of museums that are worth a visit, including the Children’s Museum of Evansville, the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, and the Reitz Home Museum, a Victorian house museum. For a fun day out with the kids, take a visit to Mesker Park Zoo, the oldest and largest zoo in the state of Indiana. Here you will find over 200 animal species and a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs. Evansville holds several large festivals throughout the year, such as the Evansville Freedom Festival in July and the Germania Männerchor Volksfest, an annual German heritage festival held in August. Evansville also has an extensive number of parks featuring excellent sports and recreational facilities. One of the most notable areas is the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, a National Natural Landmark located inside the city, which features trees that are over 400 years old. If you want to finish your trip to Evansville with an adrenaline rush, then head over to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, a theme park situated in Santa Claus, a town that is one hour drive to the northeast of Evansville.
Evansville provides an excellent transportation system, including an extensive bus system that covers the city area. If you prefer to drive a car around the area, Highway 41 is the major highway to reach nearby cities, like Indianapolis and Nashville. You can also hire a taxi from one of the local taxi companies to get around the city. If you want to travel further afield, intercity buses can take you as far as Washington D.C.
Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) is situated 3 miles (5 km) north of Evansville. The airport offers several transportation ooptions to reach the city. There are several major car rental companies located at the airport, or you can book a taxi or limousine from one of the local companies. There is also a bus route that will take you from the airport into Evansville.
