Mazatlan is one of Mexico’s top beach resorts but there’s more to this destination than just sun-soaked beaches and luxury hotels. Apart from the families, students and couples flying to Mazatlan, you can also meet expert fishers and shrimpers heading to the coast for some of the best catch in the Caribbean as Mazatlan has one of the largest fleets of commercial shrimp vessels in the world and is renowned for its sports-fishing activities.
One reason flights to Mazatlan are constantly packed with tourists is due to the broad choice of hotels in resorts to please any traveller. The beachside activities range from sunbathing to deep-sea fishing and everything in between. One of the most popular things to do in Mazatlan is to walk the malecon – Mazatlan’s beautiful coastal promenade. Edged with restaurants, bars and seaside cafes and bistros, there’s plenty to do while you’re exploring the area. Mazatlan continues to rebuild itself from a ‘Spring Break destination’ to a luxury resort spot, which is great news for travellers looking for a budget beach holiday.
The tropical wet and dry climate of Mazatlan, makes October and November the best months to visit. The peak and most expensive season is when the temperatures are at their highest between December and March so expect crowds of tourists and cruise-goers. The off-peak season is between June and August when the weather tends to be very rainy and hotel prices go down.
Once in Mazatlan, use any of several car rental options, like Advantage, Budget and Hertz. To get around the city, hop aboard a ‘pulmonia’, the open, golf cart-like taxis that run all over the city. They don’t have meters, but the fares are normally reasonable. You can also find plenty of traditional, metered taxis.
